Management is Found Everywhere

From decisions of top management
Or from lower management,
Management is found everywhere.

From decisions about what to wear
Or where to go to school,
Management is found everywhere.

From deciding to go to class
Or listening to church mass,
Management is found everywhere.

Look around you,
Management is not just found in companies,
Management is found everywhere.

ABC Easy As 1,2,3

During the Personal Profile System test showed that I was an I-D type of manager. This pretty much means that I emphasis on shaping the environment by influencing or persuading others and overcoming opposition to accomplish results. I thought the test got it right because many of traits of an I-D manager are similar to my personal traits. I love to encourage others through creating a positive atmosphere and make a good impression, while I want immediate results. Sometimes I’m not the most patient person, but I always try to make a positive atmosphere. This is why I think the test got it right for me as an I-D manager.
I don’t really wish to be another type of manager because I am extremely happy with my results. Also I think I could be another type of manager, maybe an S type of manager because they emphasis on cooperating with others to carry out the task.
I don’t really think it makes a difference in finding out what type of manager one is classified as because one already has a clear idea of what type of manager one is. The test just backs up one’s one assumption. This test could help understanding others because you know what traits they carry, so it might be easier to avoid conflict with this person.

Blogging

To be honest I wasn’t the biggest fan of blogs before. In one of my previous classes, my professor made us do blogs on things we read for the class (none of which I was interested). I use to hate doing the blogs because I thought they were annoying to do, but I was more interested in the things we learned in this class than in my previous classes. When we did our first couple of blogs I actually started to like blogging because we were given more freedom on what we can write. It was a much easier way to communicate with my classmates and express my views at the same time.

Blogging is becoming a more essential part of our hi-tech society, where everything is done through the internet. Learning how to blog is a great skill because I’m sure in the future many of us will need to create our own blogs for our jobs. Writing blogs from now gives us first hand exposure on blogs.

Probably the best part of blogging is it’s a easy way to boost your grade because you’re getting 20% of your grade for just expressing yourself. I wish other professors would do this as well. And it also allows people who are shy to communicate their ideas to the class without feeling embarrassed. Overall, I thought the idea of blogging was a great idea.

McDonalds

I was quite surprised by the management process at McDonald’s. I was extremely surprised by how well their management process went at one chain while at the other chain the experience was far from satisfactory. At the first McDonald’s I visited the management process worked extremely well, from when the cashier asked me what my order was to me receiving my hamburger and fries. But at the second location I visited the management process worked horribly. I went to two McDonald’s because at the first McDonald’s the cashier told me the receipt wouldn’t be able to print well done fries, so I went to another McDonald’s to make sure this was the case.
So let’s briefly go over the steps at both restaurants. Lets begin with my first experience. My first step was the cashier asking me what I would like. I began to give my order of one hamburger with four pickles and fries well done with no salt. I repeated my order one more time to make sure the cashier heard correctly what I wanted. After I repeated my order I thought the cashier looked at me funny, but she continued placing my order and then telling me my total. While I was talking the money out of my wallet, the cashier told a co-worker to make a new batch fries well done without salt. She repeated this twice to her co-worker. The “chef’s” in the back read my order off the monitor and prepared my hamburger with exactly four pickles. The most surprising thing about this process was that at no point did the cashier need her manager’s help in placing the order. The final step to this process was me receiving my order, which felt like I only had to wait a couple of minutes for the order, which is pretty good time. I have gone to other fast food restaurants and had to wait almost ten minutes at times for my food. So only waiting two minutes was rather surprising.
At the second restaurant, the cashier that took my order didn’t understand what I wanted. When I told her that I wanted the receipt to say hamburger with four extra pickles and well done fries without salt, she told me the receipt wouldn’t be able to print like that. When I got my receipt all it said was hamburger with extra pickles and small fries, but my first receipt said hamburger with extra pickles and small fries without salt. The cashier didn’t seem well trained because she constantly needed the help of other coworkers and the manager.
The complaint I have is making sure all the cashiers were better trained because at the second McDonald’s visited the cashier wasn’t well trained at all. The communication at McDonald’s went very well from the cashier to person preparing fries to the “chefs.” The cashier called over the person preparing fries to tell her that I wanted well done unsalted fries and the cashier didn’t have to tell the chef’s to make my hamburger with four pickles because the “chefs” where able to read it off the monitor.
I had mix reviews of the effectiveness and the efficiency of the customer service because at the first McDonald’s I visited the experience was superb, but at the second one wasn’t so great. If I was brought in as a consult to McDonald’s I would work on better training the workers, so the management process would work more efficiently.

20/20 Vision

For the past five years I have began wondering what I will do with my life after I graduate from college. For a while I had no clue what I want to do after college, but now I am starting to create more and more goals after college.
The first goal I have for me is to get accepted into NYU or Colombia University’s Sports Management Master’s program. This is my top goal because I realized that I have been in love with sports all my life and getting involved in the business side of sports would be my best job.
My second goal I have is to earn a job in the operations management department of a professional sports team. Like I stated earlier getting involved in the business side of sports is something I would love to do forever.
My third goal maybe a little far-fetched, nonetheless I want to become a professional basketball head coach or become the owner of a professional sports team. Becoming a head coach or an owner would be my dream job.
Of course I have another goal which most other people, which is getting married and starting a family. Getting married is something really within my culture. Very rarely do you find any Indian person that doesn’t get married.

Decision Time

Our first class after the midterm, Professor Kurpis gave us an activity on how to decide what to do with our midterm grade. At first I didn’t expect the decision making process to be so difficult. I assumed that nearly all the students would want their lowest grade to be dropped, but that wasn’t the case at first. Many of the students had completely different ideas and I thought compromise would never happen because the huge differences between ideas. Everyone in class seemed to compete for their idea to win, which includes me. I wanted everyone to agree to my idea, which was dropping the lowest grade.

The most difficult aspect of the decision making process is getting 100% approval of an idea because everyone has their own ideas and it is difficult to combine them, especially when people are screaming out ideas. Most of the students participated in giving out ideas, but it wasn’t so organized because everyone was screaming out ideas. I think if we all took some time to first think of the best solutions the whole process would have worked out better. We would have saved more time in the beginning, so when deciding what to do with the next midterm we would have had more time instead of coming to a rash decision. I was satisfied with the decision that we came up with in the end, but I thought there could have been a better way to come to the decision.

Culture Shock

I was born in New York, but my parents are from India. I have gone back to India many times to visit my relatives. Whenever I visit India, I learn more and more about the culture of India. I noticed some similarities between the culture of New York and the culture of India, but I also noticed many differences to.

One of the similarities I noticed between both cultures, is how much of a rush people are in. As all of you know about how busy New Yorkers are and so New Yorkers always walk faster than everyone else. In the process of being so fast, New Yorkers usually dont bother to say excuse me or apologize if the bump into someone else. The same thing is true in India, well atleast the city my parents are from. If you are not careful in India, someone might push you out of their way if your slowing them down. My cousin-in-law learned that the hard way. While trying to get off the train, another commuter pushed him out of their way and caused my cousin-in-law to hurt his back.

There are many differences though. One of the differences are how important families are in India. Although families are important here, the word family has a different meaning there. In India is extremely rare for the eldest son of the family not to live with his parents after his marriage. Usually here after we get married or earlier we move out on our own and our parents live on their own during the golden years. Another different is how people always come by unannounced to their family and friends' houses. In my grandparents' house, it is extremely common for 3 or 4 people to come over unannounced everyday. In New York, it is considered rude if you go over someone's house unannounced. In India it is a very common practice.

Although I was born and raised in New York, I love my Indian culture and try to incorporate both the culture of New York and India in my personality.
